MeltView Windows software and OptiMelt MPA100 driver installation
Stanford Research Systems, inc. 2004

A. To install the MeltView program, click on "MeltView Software" under
"Software Installation" on the CD. It will execute 'setup.exe' to initiate the
software installation process. When the "File Download" window opens,
select "Open" to begin installation directly from the CD. Follow the
instructions provided by the Windows operating system to complete the
installation.

B. Installation of the FTDI driver is required for your computer to communicate
with an OptiMelt MPA100 instrument. Please follow the "Driver Installation"
instructions below, or refer to Appendix D of the manual.

C. Driver installation: The OptiMelt USB port is based on the FT245 BM chip
from FTDI (www.ftdichip.com). The FTDI Virtual COM Port driver should be
installed before running the OptiMelt MeltView program. To install the driver,
proceed as follows:

1. Plug the OptiMelt into a PC USB port and turn the unit on.
Windows will display the message "Found New Hardware USB<->Serial.

2. If the driver is already available on the computer, then it will
be installed and a few seconds later "Your new hardware is installed
and ready to use" will be displayed. Windows2000 computers handle the
installation silently without displaying any messages, and Windows 98
computers may not respond for as long as 1 minute during the driver
   installation.

3. If the driver is not on the computer, then the Found New Hardware Wizard
will start. If the PC has internet access, choose "Install the software
automatically" and click 'Next'. The driver will be downloaded and installed
from the Microsoft Windows Update site.

4. If the PC has no internet access, you can choose "Install from a specific
location". With the Optimelt CD in your CD drive, select the CD drive letter
and then locate and select the folder "FTDI Driver v,1.00.2154".

Alternately, you can download the driver from www.ftdichip.com.
Be sure to choose the driver for the FT245BM part. Unzip the file into a
temporary directory. Choose "Install from a specific location"
in the Found New Hardware Wizard and locate the file you just unzipped.

5. When Installation is complete, click 'Finish'.

6. To confirm that the installation has completed successfully, look under the
Device manager of the System Properties screen.

Right click on 'My Computer' (on the desktop) and select ' Properties'.
In the Properties window, click the 'Hardware' tab and click on 'Device
      Manager'.

In the Device Manager window, expand the Ports(COM & LPT) by clicking the
'+' next to 'Ports'. The Virtual COM Port should apear as "USB Serial
Port (COM x)" where x was the next available COM port.

If x is larger than 9, the COM port will not be recognized by the MeltView
program. You have to change it to a lower COM port number.

To change the COM number, click on the 'PortSettings' tab. Select 'Advanced'.
Click the drop down arrow on 'COM Port Number' and scroll to the required
      COM port number. Select 'OK'.

7. If the driver installation is successful, the MeltView program is ready to use.
